A Newbie’s Guide to Hosting a Mahjong Party

From Tiles to Treats, Here’s How to Craft a Memorable Mahjong Gathering

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to host a Mahjong party, let's take a moment to understand the game of Mahjong. Originating in China, Mahjong is a captivating blend of skill, strategy, and luck.

Played with a set of 152 intricately designed tiles, the goal of American mahjong is to create winning combinations while outmaneuvering your opponents. It's like a game of strategy chess with a dash of unpredictability – perfect for a lively gathering!

So if you’re curious to see what all the fuss is about, and how to host the perfect Mahjong party, read on!

The Essentials for Your Mahjong Party

1. A High-Quality Mahjong Set

To kick off your Mahjong party, you'll need a Mahjong set — and here’s the good news: you don't need anything expensive to get started. There are so many great, budget-friendly options, including the sets from Virora. They're engraved, come with a tile bag and storage box, and (unlike a lot of boutique brands with months-long pre-order waits) they're always in stock, which makes them a great choice if you want to start playing sooner rather than later.

As a Charleston girl, I also love supporting local businesses when I can, and I'm obsessed with my Middle and Main "Charleston" tiles. Not only is the business local, but the tiles are adorable — featuring little nods to the city's iconography — and they offer plenty of other beautiful lowcountry and southeastern-themed sets, too.

Talk about a dynamic duo. Our Petal Party mat pairs perfectly with Middle and Main’s Charleston tiles.

I also have a couple of Oh My Mahjong sets that play beautifully. The chartreuse backs of the Limoncello set in particular has the most vibrant colors, and it pairs so nicely with Soirée All Day mats. I’m also a big fan of Glow Wild set and find that the tortoise shell backs are very versatile.

One note, whatever set you land on: please steer clear of sites like Alibaba. So many of the designs on those mats and tiles have been lifted from small artists — myself included — and every purchase there is money out of an independent creator's pocket.

2. Official Mahjong Hands & Rules Card

Don't forget to include the National Mah Jongg League Official Hands and Rules card in your essentials. This card provides winning hand combinations, as well as comprehensive guidance on gameplay and scoring on the back of the card. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, you need this card in order to play. And while there are many other rules cards available to use, the NMJL card is used by the vast majority of players of American mahjong so it’s best to have this one on hand, no matter what.

Now here’s the kicker. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) comes out with a new card every spring. You can purchase them directly on their website (note: they can take a couple weeks to ship), or in a 4-pack on Amazon which is great if you are hosting people for a mahjong party. There are many counterfeits, so be sure that you are purchasing from their Amazon store or the NMJL website.

3. Tables Set for Four People: Creating an Intimate Atmosphere

Now, let's talk seating arrangements. Arrange your space with tables set for four players each, ensuring plenty of room for everyone to spread out and strategize. Card tables and folding chairs are perfect for mahjong, including these rattan folding chairs if you want a more elevated setup.

5. A Mahjong Mat: Adding Flair to Your Playing Space

Next up, a mahjong mat. Whether you opt for neoprene or leatherette, a quality mat not only protects your table and tiles, but also enhances the authenticity of your setup. Think of it as the perfect backdrop for your Mahjong set! Our mats are made with an eco-friendly natural rubber back and smooth, not fuzzy surface, which make for the perfect balance of grip and glide as tiles get shuffled around.

4. A Beautiful Printed Table Cloth: Enhancing the Aesthetic Appeal

This is a small detail that goes a VERY long way. A tastefully chosen mahjong table cloth adds a touch of sophistication and ties the entire look together. Plus, if you’d like, you can use them without a mat.

I personally love the fitted tablecloths from Gilded Grasshopper. Handmade in India in small batches, each one is crafted from block-printed fabric chosen for its beautiful color, elegant pattern, and timeless feel. They’re thoughtfully designed for mahjong, too, with split sides for a more comfortable fit while you play and a hidden sleeve for stashing your mahjong mat when it’s not in use. They fit perfectly on a standard sized card table.

6. Mahjong Room Decor

If you're looking to add a decor to your space, consider decorating with Mahjong-inspired artwork. Think vibrant prints that capture the energy and elegance of the game, from hand-painted tiles to playful illustrations of Mahjong moments — a fun addition to any Mahj room (or any room, really!). They also make a great hostess gift or takeaway for guests. Take a peek at our collection of mahjong art prints below, designed to bring a little extra charm (and fun) to your space.

I'd also suggest keeping a copy of Mähj the Mag on your table or coffee table — it's a beautiful magazine for any mahj lover, and I'm honored to have been featured in their Charleston issue (read about my experience BTS here)!

7. Gifts for Your Hostess and Teacher: A Touch of Gratitude

Last but certainly not least, don't forget to show some love to your guests, hostess, and Mahjong teacher, if you have one. A thoughtful gift – like a set of Mahjong personalized stationery or gift tags – or a handwritten thank you note — are the perfect way to express your gratitude! After all, it's the little touches that make all the difference!

Tips for a Successful Mahjong Party

Now that you've set the stage for your Mahjong extravaganza, here are a few additional tips to ensure smooth sailing:

  • Refreshments: Keep your guests fueled and focused with a selection of refreshments and snacks. Think wine, teas, finger foods, and perhaps a sweet treat or two to satisfy those cravings.

  • Clear Instructions: If you have newcomers in the mix, take a moment to provide clear instructions and guidance before diving into the game — or hire an instructor for a private lesson. A cheat sheet or reference materials can be incredibly helpful for getting everyone up to speed — like this Mahjong Cheat Sheet Bundle! Grab a free, printable version by clicking here.
