Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to host a Mahjong party, let's take a moment to understand the game of Mahjong. Originating in China, Mahjong is a captivating blend of skill, strategy, and luck.
Played with a set of 152 intricately designed tiles, the goal of American mahjong is to create winning combinations while outmaneuvering your opponents. It's like a game of strategy chess with a dash of unpredictability – perfect for a lively gathering!

1. A High-Quality Mahjong Set
To kick off your Mahjong party, you'll need a Mahjong set — and here’s the good news: you don't need anything expensive to get started. There are so many great, budget-friendly options, including the sets from Virora. Don't forget to include the National Mah Jongg League Official Hands and Rules card in your essentials. This card provides winning hand combinations, as well as comprehensive guidance on gameplay and scoring on the back of the card. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, you need this card in order to play. And while there are many other rules cards available to use, the NMJL card is used by the vast majority of players of American mahjong so it’s best to have this one on hand, no matter what.
Now here’s the kicker. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) comes out with a new card every spring. You can purchase them directly on their website (note: they can take a couple weeks to ship), or in a 4-pack on Amazon which is great if you are hosting people for a mahjong party. There are many counterfeits, so be sure that you are purchasing from their Amazon store or the NMJL website.

3. Tables Set for Four People: Creating an Intimate Atmosphere
